Council

Newfoundland T’Railway

The Newfoundland T’Railway Council, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to revitalizing the former Canadian National railway line into a dynamic recreational trail that stretches from St. John’s to Port aux Basques. We advocate for a variety of trail activities, including hiking, biking, equestrianism, snowmobiling, ATV riding, and cross-country skiing. Additionally, we are exploring the potential for other activities such as dog sledding and snowshoeing in designated areas.

Our Vision

To sustainably develop and utilize the Newfoundland T’Railway while preserving its natural environment, cultural heritage, and continuity as a recreational corridor for both current and future users.

The Council’s Objectives are:

1. Collaborate with Community and Government: Work together with community groups and government resource agencies to fully leverage the province’s natural heritage and enhance quality of life.

2. Preserve Special Areas: Ensure the preservation of Special Areas and raise awareness of the natural and cultural environment by partnering with appropriate agencies.

3. Encourage Regional and Local Leadership: Foster leadership at both regional and local levels.

4. Boost Tourism and Economic Development: Increase recognition of the province’s trail network to promote tourism-related economic growth.

5. Promote Cooperation and Consensus: Facilitate cooperation and seek consensus to prevent conflicts with T’Railway stakeholders.

6. Encourage Private Investment: Attract private investment for the development and maintenance of the trail.

7. Leverage Global Enthusiasm for Hiking: Capitalize on the growing global interest in hiking trails.

8. Advance Strategic Priorities: Utilize the T’Railway to support regional, provincial, and national strategic priorities.

9. Ensure Consistent Standards: Act as a resource for other trail groups to maintain consistent standards in trail management, maintenance, liability, and risk management.

10. Support the Trans Canada Trail: Assist in the development and enhancement of the Trans Canada Trail.
